Gustaf Åkerhielm (born June 24, 1833 – died April 2, 1900) was an important Swedish politician. He was also a baron, which is a noble title, and a landowner. He served as the Prime Minister of Sweden from 1889 to 1891.
Who Was Gustaf Åkerhielm?
Gustaf Åkerhielm was born in Klara, Stockholm. He came from a noble family. In 1860, he married Ulrika Gyldenstolpe. They had three children together.
His Political Journey
Åkerhielm was a member of the Parliament of Sweden for many years. He served two times in parliament. His first time was from 1859 to 1866. He returned to parliament in 1870 and stayed until 1900.
He held several important government jobs. From 1874 to 1875, he was the Minister of Finance. This meant he was in charge of the country's money. In 1889, he also became the Minister for Foreign Affairs. This role involved dealing with other countries.
Becoming Prime Minister
Later in 1889, Gustaf Åkerhielm became the Prime Minister of Sweden. He took over from Gillis Bildt. He served as Prime Minister for almost two years. His time as leader ended on July 10, 1891. After him, Erik Gustaf Boström became the new Prime Minister.
