Guy-Olivier Segond (14 September 1945 – 12 November 2020) was an important Swiss politician. He was known for his long career serving the city and Canton of Geneva. He held several key positions, including Mayor of Geneva and a member of the Geneva government.

Early Life and Education
Guy-Olivier Segond was born in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1945. He studied law at the University of Geneva. After finishing his studies, he worked as a legal advisor. From 1970 to 1979, he advised the Department of Public Education. He also led the Protestant Church of Geneva for five years, from 1970 to 1975. In the 1980s, he had a life-saving kidney operation.
Political Career in Geneva
Segond started his political journey in 1979. He joined the Administrative Council of Geneva, taking over a seat from Lise Girardin. On this council, he was in charge of departments like Social Affairs, Schools, and Parks. He was re-elected to this role in 1983 and 1987.
Serving as Mayor
Guy-Olivier Segond served as the Mayor of Geneva twice. His first term was from 1983 to 1984. He served again from 1988 to 1989. During his time, he helped create over 100 city playgrounds. He also played a part in setting up a local cable network for the city.
Joining the Council of State
In November 1989, Segond was elected to the Council of State of Geneva. This is like the main government for the Canton of Geneva. He was re-elected in 1993 and 1997. He even served as the President of the Council twice, from 1995 to 1996 and again from 1999 to 2000.
Focus on Youth and Europe
From 1980 to 1990, Segond was the President of the Federal Commission for Youth. This shows his interest in young people's issues. He also strongly believed that Switzerland should work closely with other European countries. He supported Switzerland joining the European Economic Area.
Leaving Politics
In 2001, Guy-Olivier Segond decided not to run for another term. He had served the Canton of Geneva for many years. People described him as a dedicated public servant with strong beliefs.
Later Activities
After leaving his main political roles, Segond remained active. In 2002, he became a special ambassador for the Secretary General of the International Telecommunication Union. In this role, he helped prepare for the World Summit on the Information Society in 2003. This important meeting took place in Geneva.
In 2011, he appeared as a witness in a court case involving the Banque cantonale de Genève. This case was about the bank's finances. Segond had been part of the Council of State when some of these financial issues came up. He explained that before 1999, the Canton was not very worried about the bank's accounts.
Segond was also involved in several groups, such as the Swiss-Chinese Association. He also supported the World Association for the School as an Instrument of Peace. Even after retiring, he stayed interested in politics. He continued to be active in his political party, which later merged to become FDP.The Liberals.

In 1993, Guy-Olivier Segond appeared in a film called L'État c'est quoi ? I : Élire. The film was directed by Patrick Conscience. Its goal was to teach young people about citizenship and how politics works.
Death and Legacy
Guy-Olivier Segond passed away in Geneva on 12 November 2020. He was 75 years old. He was buried at the Cimetière des Rois, also known as the "Cemetery of Kings." This cemetery is considered a very important burial place in Geneva.
