Who Was Guy H. Watkins?

Guy Hulett Watkins was born in Towanda, Pennsylvania, in 1831. He grew up and went to school there. Later, he moved to Lima, New York, to finish his education at a special school called a seminary.

Becoming a Lawyer

After finishing school, Guy Watkins decided to follow in his father's footsteps. His father, William Watkins, was also a lawyer. Guy joined his father's law office to learn the profession.

On September 9, 1853, Guy Watkins officially became a lawyer. This meant he could now represent people in court. He was good at his job and worked hard.

In 1859, the people of his area chose him to be their district attorney. A district attorney is a lawyer who works for the government. Their job is to bring criminals to justice and represent the public in court cases. Guy Watkins was still serving as district attorney when the Civil War began.

Serving in the Civil War

The American Civil War started in 1861. It was a conflict between the northern states (the Union) and the southern states (the Confederacy). Guy Watkins decided to join the Union Army to fight for his country.

He became a Lieutenant Colonel, which is a senior officer rank. This meant he was in charge of many soldiers. He fought in important battles during the war.

Sadly, Guy Watkins was killed during the Siege of Petersburg. This was a long and difficult battle in Petersburg, Virginia. He died around June 19, 1864, while serving his country.
