Towanda is a small town, called a borough, in Pennsylvania, USA. It is the main town, or county seat, of Bradford County. You can find it in Northeastern Pennsylvania, about 66 miles northwest of Wilkes-Barre. It sits right by the Susquehanna River. The name "Towanda" comes from an old Native American language. It means "burial ground." In 2020, about 2,833 people lived there.

History of Towanda
Towanda was first settled in 1784. It became the main town for the county in 1812. For some years, people called it by different names. These names included Meansville, Overton, and Williamson. The name Towanda was officially chosen in 1828.
Long ago, Towanda was known for its many factories. These factories made things like flour, silk, and even toys. They also made furniture and parts for machines. In 1900, about 4,663 people lived in Towanda. By 1910, the population was 4,281.
The Towanda Historic District and the Bradford County Courthouse are important places in Towanda. They are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are special historical sites. A book from 1940, called Pennsylvania: A Guide to the Keystone State, described Towanda as a pretty town. It had wide, brick-paved streets. The town was on a hill next to the Susquehanna River. It was a busy shopping area for local farmers and visitors.
Geography and Climate
Where is Towanda Located?
Towanda is in the middle of Bradford County. It is on the west side of the Susquehanna River. The town is about 730 feet above sea level. To the north and west, it borders North Towanda Township. To the south and west, it borders Towanda Township. Across the river to the east is Wysox Township.
Two main roads pass near Towanda. U.S. Route 6 goes through the center of town. It leads southeast to Tunkhannock and the Scranton area. It goes west to Mansfield. U.S. Route 220 goes around the west side of Towanda. It heads north to Waverly, New York, and southwest to Williamsport.
The total area of Towanda is about 1.17 square miles (3.0 square kilometers). A small part of this area, about 2.55%, is water.
