Guy II of Ponthieu (born around 1120 – died December 25, 1147) was an important figure in French history. He was the son of William III of Ponthieu and Helie of Burgundy. Guy became a powerful leader in the region of Ponthieu, which is now part of France.
Life of Guy II
Guy became the Count of Ponthieu even before 1129. A "Count" was a powerful noble who ruled a large area of land. He took over this role while his father, William, was still alive. This was a way for Guy to learn how to govern.
Around the year 1137, Guy helped start a special place called Valloires Abbey. An "abbey" is a type of monastery where monks live and pray. This abbey belonged to the Cistercian order, which was a group of monks known for their simple lives.
Guy later joined the Second Crusade. A "Crusade" was a series of religious wars during the Middle Ages. He traveled with King Louis VII of France on this journey. Sadly, Guy became sick and died on December 25, 1147, in a city called Ephesus.
After Guy's death, his son, John I of Ponthieu, took over as the new Count of Ponthieu.
