Gwalia is an old and important building in Liverpool, England. It was built a long time ago, between 1851 and 1854. It used to be known as Sandfield Tower. Today, Gwalia is a special building because it is a Grade II listed building. This means it is protected because of its history and architecture.
The Story of Gwalia
Gwalia was first built for a man named Joseph Edwards. He was a merchant who bought and sold goods with countries in South America. The building was finished in 1854.
Over many years, Gwalia had different owners. Eventually, it was bought by a group called the Church of Christ, Scientist. The building has not been used since the 1980s.
Gwalia's Current State
Today, Gwalia is in a very bad condition. It needs a lot of repairs. The Liverpool City Council has been talking to the owners since 2004. They want the owners to fix the building.
The council has even threatened to use a compulsory purchase order. This means the council might buy the building from the owners to make sure it gets fixed. In 2016, the owners said they were talking to people who wanted to buy Gwalia. These buyers were interested in turning the building into apartments. However, as of late 2023, Gwalia is still in poor condition.
