Rosa Gwenny Griffiths (born June 25, 1867 – died December 22, 1953) was a talented artist from Wales. She was especially known for her beautiful paintings of people (portraits) and flowers.

About Gwenny Griffiths

Gwenny Griffiths was born in Druslyn, a part of Swansea, in south Wales. She began her art journey at the Swansea Art School. Later, she moved to London to study at the famous Slade School of Art. There, she learned from a well-known teacher named Alphonse Legros.

After her time in London, Gwenny traveled to Paris, France. She continued to improve her skills at two more art schools: the Académie Julian and the Académie Colarossi.

Showing Her Art

Gwenny first showed her paintings in London in 1892. This was with a group called the Society of British Artists. Her painting was titled Madame Chrysantheme. She then regularly showed her art at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. These were very important places for artists to display their work.

Sometimes, her art was shown in other countries too. She had paintings in Budapest, Hungary, at the Salon Nemzeti. In 1914, her works were also seen at the Paris Salon, another major art exhibition.

Gwenny was an active member of the Women's International Art Club. She even served as the club's honorary secretary in 1906 and 1907. In 1922, she had her own special art show at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea.

Famous Portraits

Gwenny Griffiths painted many important portraits. She captured the likeness of famous people like Dame Margaret Lloyd George. She also painted Lord Justice Banks and the Viscountess Hawarden. Even the trustees of Swansea Hospital were among her subjects.

For some time, Gwenny lived in Cannes, France. However, during World War II, she returned to Wales. After the war ended, she went back to live in France.

Gwenny Griffiths passed away in Cannes, France, on December 22, 1953. She was 86 years old.
