School History
Gympie State High School opened its doors in 1912. It was one of the very first high schools in Queensland. The school was first located on Lawrence Street. Later, in 1917, the first building on Cootharaba Road was built. This building became a well-known landmark in Gympie.
Sadly, on May 18, 1955, the original building was destroyed by a fire. This fire happened because of a science experiment. New buildings, called Blocks B, C, and D, were built on the same spot later that year. More blocks like E, J, and M were added in the 1960s. Blocks A, H, and Hamilton Hall were built in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Blocks N, O, and the school pool were constructed.
In the 1990s, K Block was rebuilt from an older 1930s building. The current main office building was also built then. The newest big change happened in 2014. This was to get the school ready for Year 7 students to join. On September 21, 2018, some of the school's buildings were added to the Queensland Heritage Register. This means they are important historical places.
