A Look Back at Gympie High's History
Gympie State High School first opened its doors in 1912. It was one of the very first high schools in Queensland. The school was first located on Lawrence Street. This is where Gympie Central State School is now.
Building the School Campus
The first building on Cootharaba Road was built in 1917. This building became one of Gympie's most famous landmarks. Sadly, on May 18, 1955, this original building was destroyed by fire. The fire started because of a science experiment.
Later that same year, new buildings called Blocks B, C, and D were built. They were put on the same site. More blocks like E, J, and M were built in the 1960s. Blocks A, H, and Hamilton Hall were added in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Blocks N, O, and the school pool were built.
In the 1990s, K Block was rebuilt from an older 1930s building. The current main office building was also constructed then. The newest major changes happened in 2014. These changes were made to get ready for Year 7 students joining the high school.
Recognized for History
On September 21, 2018, some of the buildings at Gympie State High School were added to the Queensland Heritage Register. This means they are important historical places.
