Charles Gyude Bryant (born January 17, 1949 – died April 16, 2014) was an important Liberian politician and businessman. He led Liberia as the Chairman of the Transitional Government from October 14, 2003, to January 16, 2006.
This special government was set up as part of a peace agreement. Its goal was to end Liberia's second civil war. This war had been going on since 1999. Different groups were fighting, including the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) and the Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL).
Before becoming a leader, Bryant was a successful businessman. He was chosen to lead the country because he was seen as a neutral person. This meant he was not strongly on any side of the fighting groups. So, everyone could agree on him. He was also a well-known member of the Episcopal Church of Liberia. He had spoken out against earlier governments in Liberia.
After his time as chairman, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf won the elections in 2005. She took over from Bryant in January 2006. Gyude Bryant passed away on April 16, 2014, in Monrovia.
About His Life
Gyude Bryant was born in Monrovia, Liberia, in 1949. His mother came from families who had settled in Liberia a long time ago. His father was a member of the Grebo people, an ethnic group in Liberia.
He went to Cuttington University in 1972. In 1974, he married Rosilee Williams. They had two children together, Cheryl and Charles. Bryant also had another son named Charles Mleh.
Before he became the leader of the interim government, he was a very successful businessman. He owned a company that provided machinery for the main port in Monrovia. He was also the chairman of a political group called the Liberian Action Party. This party later joined with President Sirleaf's Unity Party.
