Hédi Baccouche was an important political leader in Tunisia. He was born on January 15, 1930, in Hammam Sousse. He served as the Prime Minister of Tunisia from November 7, 1987, to September 27, 1989. He also led a major political group called the Socialist Destourian Party. This party later changed its name to the Constitutional Democratic Rally in 1988. Hédi Baccouche passed away on January 21, 2020.
His Life and Career
Hédi Baccouche studied in France during the 1950s. While studying, he was active in student politics. He was part of the General Union of Tunisian Students. He was even arrested in France for his political work. After his release, a famous Tunisian leader, Habib Bourguiba, personally welcomed him.
In the 1960s, Hédi Baccouche took on important roles. He became a governor in different regions like Bizerte, Sfax, and Gabes. A governor is like a leader for a specific area. He was also the mayor of his hometown, Hammam Sousse, from 1960 to 1964.
Later, he worked as the CEO of the National Fisheries Office. He also advised the Prime Minister, Hédi Nouira. For a time, he served as a consul general in Lyon, France. A consul general helps citizens from their home country who are living abroad.
From 1981 to 1982, Hédi Baccouche was an ambassador to Bern (Switzerland) and the Holy See (Vatican). An ambassador represents their country in another nation. He then became the ambassador to Algeria.
In 1987, he was appointed as the Minister of Social Affairs. This role involves looking after the well-being of people in society.
Becoming Prime Minister
On November 7, 1987, Hédi Baccouche became the Prime Minister of Tunisia. He took over from Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali. Ben Ali had just replaced President Bourguiba in a peaceful change of leadership. Hédi Baccouche also became the Secretary General of the Socialist Destourian Party. He is known for helping to explain this change in leadership.
He served as Prime Minister for nearly two years. On September 27, 1989, Hamed Karoui took over the role from him.
After his time as Prime Minister, President Ben Ali appointed Hédi Baccouche to the Chamber of Advisers in 2005. This is a special group that gives advice. He was also a member of the central committee of the ruling Democratic Constitutional Rally party. This group was dissolved on January 20, 2011, during the Tunisian revolution.
Hédi Baccouche passed away on January 21, 2020. He was 90 years old.
