Ahmet Hüsamettin Cindoruk, born on June 8, 1933, is a well-known Turkish politician. He served as the 17th Speaker of the Parliament of Turkey from 1991 to 1995. He also briefly held the important role of acting president of Turkey in 1993. Mr. Cindoruk led two different political parties during his career, including the True Path Party.
Early Life and Schooling
Hüsamettin Cindoruk was born in 1933 in the city of İzmir. His parents were Cretan Turks, meaning they had Turkish roots from the island of Crete. He went to school in Ankara, Turkey's capital. He graduated from the respected TED Ankara College. Later, he studied at the University of Ankara, earning a degree in law in 1955. After finishing his studies, he began working as a lawyer.
Becoming a Lawyer
Mr. Cindoruk became well-known at a young age. This happened after a big change in Turkey's government in 1960. At that time, the former Prime Minister, Adnan Menderes, and other important politicians were put in prison. Hüsamettin Cindoruk joined the team of lawyers who defended them. Even though the case did not end well for the politicians, the lawyers' hard work for a whole year earned them a lot of respect across Turkey.
Political Journey
After Turkey's government returned to civilian rule, Hüsamettin Cindoruk joined the Justice Party. Later, after another military takeover in 1980, he became a key leader in 1985. He was named the Secretary General of the True Path Party. This new party was a continuation of the Justice Party. Its main leader, Süleyman Demirel, was not allowed to be involved in politics at that time.
When Süleyman Demirel was allowed to return to politics, Mr. Cindoruk handed over the party leadership to him. In 1991, the Democratic Party won the election. Hüsamettin Cindoruk then became the 17th Speaker of the Parliament. He held this important position from 1991 to 1995.
In 1993, a big change happened. The President of Turkey, Turgut Özal, passed away. Süleyman Demirel was then elected as the new President. This meant the Prime Minister's job was open. Hüsamettin Cindoruk could have become the Prime Minister. However, he chose to stay as Speaker of Parliament for a while. This opened the way for Tansu Çiller to become Prime Minister. Later, when he decided to run for Prime Minister, Tansu Çiller had already gained strong support within the party.
Mr. Cindoruk left his Speaker position in early 1995. He then started his own political group called the Party for a Democratic Turkey (DTP). However, this party did not do well in the 1996 general elections. Despite this, Cindoruk and his party were part of the government formed by Mesut Yılmaz. After getting poor results in the 1999 elections too, he decided to step down as party leader and left active politics. Years later, in 2009, he became the leader of the Democrat Party. After a few months, he helped unite the Democrat Party and the Motherland Party.
Family Life
Hüsamettin Cindoruk is married and has three children.
