İsmet Sezgin (born January 6, 1928 – died December 7, 2016) was an important Turkish politician. He held many high-ranking jobs in the government. From 1997 to 1999, he was the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey and the Minister of National Defense. In 1995, he served as the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly, which is like the head of the Turkish Parliament.
He was also the Minister of the Interior from 1991 to 1993. Before that, he was the Minister of Finance from 1979 to 1980. One of his first big roles was as the Minister of Youth and Sports from 1969 to 1971. Later, from 1999 to 2002, he led the Democrat Turkey Party.
İsmet Sezgin was involved in Turkey's right-wing politics for a long time. He was part of the historic Democrat Party until a military takeover in 1960. He became a Member of Parliament for Aydın in 1961 and served for many years. After another military takeover in 1980, he was re-elected in 1991. He left politics in 2002. İsmet Sezgin also loved sports and was the chairman of the Gençlerbirliği S.K. football club from 1967 to 1968.
Early Life and Education
İsmet Sezgin was born in 1928 in Aydın, a city in Turkey. He was the oldest of nine children. He went to primary and secondary school in Aydın and finished high school in İzmir.
He then studied at the High Economy and Trade School, which is now called Dokuz Eylül University. While he was a student, he was very active in athletics. After finishing his studies in 1950, he started working at the Ziraat Bankası in Denizli. In 1952, he married Saadet Sezgin, who was a mathematics teacher. In the same year, he joined the local leadership of the Democrat Party.
Political Journey
Serving as Mayor of Aydın
In 1955, İsmet Sezgin was elected as the Mayor of Aydın for the Democrat Party. However, his time as mayor ended in 1960. This happened because of a military takeover that removed the Democrat Party government from power. After this event, İsmet Sezgin was held for a short time.
Joining the Justice Party
After being released, İsmet Sezgin helped set up the local office of the new Justice Party (AP). Many people saw this party as the continuation of the old Democrat Party. In the 1961 national election, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Aydın.
In 1963, he became the head of the Turkish Municipal Association, a role he held until 1985. He also led the Gençlerbirliği S.K. football club from 1967 to 1968. In 1968, he became a Deputy Leader of the Justice Party.
Minister of Youth and Sports Role
After the Justice Party won the 1969 election, Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel created the Ministry of Youth and Sports. İsmet Sezgin was chosen as Turkey's very first Minister of Youth and Sports. Even when the government faced some challenges, Sezgin continued in this role. He left the position in 1971 when another military intervention occurred.
Minister of Finance Role
Later, Süleyman Demirel formed a new government, and İsmet Sezgin became the Minister of Finance. This government was made up only of Justice Party members. However, this government also ended in 1980 due to a military takeover. After this, Parliament was closed, and many politicians, including Sezgin, were not allowed to hold political office.
Minister of the Interior Role
In 1987, the ban on politicians was lifted. İsmet Sezgin returned to Parliament in 1991, representing Aydın again. This time, he was with the True Path Party (DYP), which was also started by Süleyman Demirel. The DYP formed a government with another party, and Sezgin was appointed Minister of the Interior.
Serving as Speaker of Parliament
In 1993, President Turgut Özal passed away, and Süleyman Demirel became the new President. İsmet Sezgin wanted to become the leader of the DYP but later decided not to. After Tansu Çiller became the new DYP leader, Sezgin resigned from his role as Interior Minister.
In 1995, he was elected as the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly. He held this important position until the 1995 general election.
Minister of National Defense and Deputy Prime Minister
In 1996, the DYP formed a government with another party. İsmet Sezgin disagreed with this and left the DYP. He then helped start a new party called the Democrat Turkey Party (DTP). The government he had left later collapsed.
In 1997, a new government was formed by Mesut Yılmaz. This government was a coalition of three parties, including the DTP. Since the DTP leader was not in the government, İsmet Sezgin became the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey. He also served as the Minister of National Defense at the same time. This government also ended due to political issues.
Leading the DTP
In the 1999 general election, İsmet Sezgin's party, the DTP, did not get enough votes to enter Parliament. Because of this, he and other DTP members lost their seats. The party leader resigned, and İsmet Sezgin was chosen as the new leader of the DTP. However, he resigned in May 2002 without taking part in any elections as party leader. He then announced that he was retiring from politics.
Personal Life
İsmet Sezgin married Saadet Sezgin in 1952. She was a mathematics teacher and passed away in 2004. They had two daughters named Seynan Levent and Ayşe. İsmet Sezgin passed away on December 7, 2016, at the age of 88, due to organ failure.
