The H.E. Fledderjohann Property is a group of five old buildings in the village of New Knoxville, Ohio, United States. Three of these buildings — a house, a doctor's office, and a separate kitchen building — were once owned by Dr. H.E. Fledderjohann. He was a very important physician (doctor) in New Knoxville during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Who Was Dr. Fledderjohann?
Henry E. Fledderjohann was born in Ohio. His father, Herman Fledderjohann, came from Prussia (a country in Europe) in 1835. Herman worked hard building the Miami and Erie Canal. He became a foreman, which means he was a leader for the construction workers.
Henry Fledderjohann became a doctor. He finished medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in 1886. Other doctors thought highly of him. He was part of important medical groups, like the Northwestern Ohio Medical Association. In 1906, he became the vice president of the Auglaize County Medical Society.
Dr. Fledderjohann also helped his community in other ways. In 1902, he was the health officer for the New Knoxville Board of Health. This meant he helped keep the town healthy. Besides being a family doctor, he was also an inventor. In 1913, he received a patent for a new type of steam turbine. A patent is like a special permission that says you invented something.
Exploring the Historic Buildings
Dr. Fledderjohann's house was built in 1879. It was built by Gustave Zuelch, who was also a doctor in the village before Fledderjohann.
Right next to the house is the doctor's office. This building was built in 1890. It is a one-story brick building. It has small, round windows that let light into the attic (the space under the roof).
The kitchen building is a one-story frame structure. It is located right behind the main house. These three buildings are very important because of their connection to Dr. Fledderjohann. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. This list helps protect important historical places.
Today, Dr. Fledderjohann's property is a museum. The New Knoxville Historical Society runs it. His house is now a historic house museum, where visitors can learn about life in the past. The museum also includes other old buildings, like a barn, a barber shop, and a small log house.
