The H.E. Fledderjohann Property is a group of five old buildings in the village of New Knoxville, Ohio, United States. Three of these buildings – a house, a doctor's office, and a separate kitchen building – were owned and used by Dr. H.E. Fledderjohann. He was a very important physician (doctor) in New Knoxville during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Meet Dr. Fledderjohann
Dr. Henry Fledderjohann's father, Herman Fledderjohann, came from Prussia (a country that used to be in Europe) in 1835. When he first arrived in Ohio, Herman worked on building the Miami and Erie Canal. He was a hard worker and quickly became a foreman, which means he was in charge of other workers. He was also a respected leader in the community.
Henry Fledderjohann was one of Herman's eighteen children. Henry's brother, B.A. Fledderjohann, even served in the Ohio House of Representatives, helping to make laws for the state. Henry himself went to medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and finished in 1886.
Other doctors thought highly of Dr. Fledderjohann. He was part of the Northwestern Ohio Medical Association. In 1906, he became the vice president of the Auglaize County Medical Society. He also worked for the public, serving as the health officer for New Knoxville in 1902. Besides being a great family doctor, Dr. Fledderjohann was also an inventor. In 1913, he received a patent for a special kind of steam turbine. A patent is like a special permission from the government that says only you can make or sell your invention for a certain time.
The Historic Buildings
Dr. Fledderjohann's house was built in 1879 by Gustave Zuelch. Mr. Zuelch was also a doctor in the village before Fledderjohann, from 1878 to 1888. Right next to the house is the doctor's office. This office was built in 1890. It's a one-story brick building with small, round windows that open into the attic (the space just under the roof).
The kitchen building is a one-story frame structure. It's located right behind the main house. These three buildings – the house, the office, and the kitchen – were officially listed together on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993. They were recognized mainly because of their strong connection to Dr. Fledderjohann and his work. The National Register of Historic Places is a list of important places in the United States that are worth saving because of their history.
Today, Dr. Fledderjohann's property is a museum run by the New Knoxville Historical Society. His home is now a historic house museum, where visitors can learn about life in the past. Besides the three main historic buildings, the museum also has a barn, an old barber shop, and a small log house.
