The James was a powerful warship of the Royal Navy in England. It was a "second-rank" ship of the line, meaning it was a large and important fighting ship. The ship was built in 1634.
The James was built by Phineas Pett II. He was a famous shipbuilder. The ship was constructed at Deptford Dockyard. This was a major shipbuilding center in England.
At first, the James had 48 guns. These cannons were used to defend the ship and attack enemies.
A New Name for the James
In 1660, a big change happened in England. The king returned to power. This event is called the Restoration of the English monarchy.
Because of this, some ships were renamed. Another ship, the Richard, became the Royal James. To avoid confusion, the James was then called Old James.
By this time, the Old James had even more firepower. Its number of guns increased to 60. This made it an even stronger warship.
End of Service
The Old James served the Royal Navy for many years. It was an important part of England's fleet.
In 1682, the ship was sold. This meant it was no longer part of the navy.
