HMS Northumberland was a large warship of the Royal Navy, built in England. It was launched in 1705. This ship was known as a "ship of the line" because it was strong enough to be part of the main battle formation of a navy. It originally carried 70 guns.
Life as a British Warship
Over its lifetime, Northumberland was rebuilt two times. These rebuilds were like major upgrades to keep the ship modern and strong. Both times, the work was done at Woolwich Dockyard.
The first rebuild happened in 1721. After this, it was still a 70-gun ship. The second rebuild took place in 1743. This time, it was changed to carry 64 guns instead of 70.
Captured by France
On May 8, 1744, a big event happened to Northumberland. It was captured by two French warships. These ships were called Mars and Content.
After being captured, the French navy took over Northumberland. They kept its name for a while. But in 1766, they renamed it Atlas.
What Happened Next?
The ship, now called Atlas, continued its service with the French navy. However, its journey ended in February 1781. The ship sank off the coast of Ushant, an island near France.
