HMS Uva facts for kids
HMS Uva was a special place where sailors from the Royal Navy could relax and rest. It was located in Diyatalawa, a town in what was then called British Ceylon (which is now Sri Lanka).
People say this camp was first built in 1900 during the Boer War to hold prisoners of war. Later, during the Second World War, it became a hospital for the Royal Navy, helping injured sailors. On December 1, 1945, the rest camp officially became its own special base, known as Uva.
In 1957, the camp's financial records were moved to another base called HMS Lanka. Then, on September 30, 1958, the entire camp was given to the Air Ministry, which was in charge of air forces.
