What Does "San Ignacio Tesip" Mean?
The name "San Ignacio Tesip" mixes two languages: Spanish and Maya. "San Ignacio" is a Spanish name, honoring Ignatius of Loyola. "Tesip" comes from the Mayan language. It combines "te," meaning "place," and "Sip," who was a Mayan goddess of the hunt. So, the name means "Place of Sip."
A Look at the Hacienda's Past
Haciendas were like large estates or plantations in Mexico. Many of them grew henequen, a plant used to make rope and other fiber products. The henequen business was very big in Yucatán in the 1800s.
The Cuxtal Ecological Reserve
On June 28, 1993, the Cuxtal Ecological Reserve was created. Its goal was to protect the history of seven large haciendas, their nearby villages, and other important sites. These sites include 12 smaller archaeological spots, 6 cenotes (natural sinkholes), and a key water supply station for Mérida. Hacienda San Ignacio Tesip is one of these protected haciendas.
The reserve protects these other haciendas too:
- Hacienda Hunxectamán
- Hacienda San Antonio Tahdzibichén
- Hacienda San Nicolás Dzoyaxché (which has a cenote called Dzonot-Ich)
- Hacienda San Pedro Chimay
- Hacienda Santa Cruz Palomeque
- Hacienda Xmatkuil
Hacienda San Ignacio Tesip Today
Today, Hacienda San Ignacio Tesip is often rented out for special events. Many people choose it for weddings or photo shoots. It even appeared in a Mexican soap opera, known as a telenovella! The show was called “Abismo de Pasión” (Abyss of Passion). In the story, the main character, Elisa Castañón, lived at the hacienda. Filming for the show took place there until its final episode in September 2012.
People Living in Tesip
Before 1937, many people lived and worked on the henequen farms. But then, the government made some big changes to land ownership. This meant that the large haciendas stopped being independent communities. Most of the land was given to groups of farmers called ejidos. The original owners were only allowed to keep a smaller part of the land.
Because of these changes, the population numbers changed. Before 1937, the numbers show how many people lived on the farm itself. After 1937, the numbers show how many people lived in the nearby village of Tesip, as only the owner's family lived at the hacienda.
According to a count done in 2005, the village of Tesip had 329 people. This included 162 men and 167 women.
