History of Hacienda San Pedro
The first records of Hacienda San Pedro are from 1666. Many Spanish families owned it over time. Its story is closely linked to how the Valle de las Salinas (Salinas Valley) was settled. This area was once part of the New Kingdom of León.
Who Built the Hacienda?
The first owner and founder of this hacienda was Captain Alonso de Treviño. In 1814, the Gutiérrez de Lara family took over. At that time, the hacienda covered a huge part of the Salinas Valley.
Building the Fort and Farm
Building the hacienda took 31 years. It was finally finished in 1845. The main part of the farm was also used as a fort. General Mariano Arista and his soldiers stayed there on January 23, 1840. They had just fought against 600 Comanches. The site was used as a fortress many times during the Comanche War.
What the Hacienda Produced
An irrigation ditch from the Salinas River helped water the fields. People grew corn, sugar cane, grapes, vegetables, and fruit trees. They also raised cattle, goats, and sheep.
End of Production
Hacienda San Pedro stopped its farming activities around 1950. Most of its land was sold off. For about 30 years, the main building was left empty and started to fall apart.
Bringing the Hacienda Back to Life
In 1984, the Autonomous University of Nuevo León bought the central part of Hacienda San Pedro. They started fixing it up in April 1986. This work helped save the historic building.
Hacienda San Pedro Today
Today, Hacienda San Pedro is a cultural center and museum for the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL). You can take guided tours there. It has a library with books about the history of northeastern Mexico. There are also galleries that show historic and artistic exhibits.
