Hackney, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Hackney is a small, quiet place located in the northwest part of Greene County, in the state of Missouri. It's not a big city or town, but what's called an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does. Hackney was once an important spot because it had a mill right next to the Little Sac River.

What is an Unincorporated Community?

An "unincorporated community" is a group of homes or buildings that isn't officially part of any city or town. Instead, it's usually governed by the larger county it's in. Hackney is one such community. It sits on the north bank of a bend in the Little Sac River.

A Look Back: Hackney's History

Hackney got its name from a person who owned and ran a local mill there. Mills were very important long ago. They used the power of flowing water to grind grain into flour.

Hackney's Post Office

A post office opened in Hackney in 1889. This was a big deal for the community. It meant people could send and receive mail more easily. The post office served the area for several years before closing in 1905.

The Hackney Mill Bridge

Near the community, there was an old iron bridge called the Hackney Mill Bridge. It was built a long time ago, between 1895 and 1896. This bridge helped people cross the Little Sac River. In 1996, a new bridge was built to replace the old one, making travel safer and easier for everyone.
