The Hailey Masonic Lodge is a historic building in Hailey, Idaho. It was built in 1937. This building was made as a special meeting place for a local group called Hailey Lodge No. 16. This group is part of the Freemasons, which is a social and charitable organization.
In 2008, the lodge was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important building. It was chosen because it has been a gathering place for community leaders. Its unique design also made it special.
The Hailey Masonic Lodge
What is the Lodge?
The Hailey Masonic Lodge building is a one-story structure. It is covered in red bricks that were brought from Salt Lake City. Above the main double doors, there is a special arched design. This design shows the Masonic symbol, which is a square and compass.
Inside the building, you can find a raised platform called a dais. There is also a podium and a kneeler. These are items used during meetings. The lodge also displays 20 portraits of past leaders, known as Lodge Masters. Outside, two spruce trees stand near the front entrance. Along Bullion Street, you can see mature maple trees.
A History of Fires!
The local group, Hailey Lodge No. 16, started in 1884. It began with 11 members. Over time, it grew a lot, reaching 225 members during World War I or II.
The first meeting hall for the lodge was destroyed in 1889. A big fire burned down most of Hailey that year. Later, their second hall also burned down in 1927. The current building, which is the third hall, was built after these fires.
The Master Builder
The current lodge building was constructed in 1937. The builder was John M. (Jack) Rutter. He was a Mason himself and originally came from England.
Jack Rutter was a very busy builder in Hailey. He worked for 70 years and built many other important buildings. Some of his other projects include:
- The Liberty Theatre
- Rialto Hotel
- Guyer Hot Springs hotel and pool
- St. Thomas Episcopal Church
- St. Charles Parish Hall
- The Christiana Club
- Blaine Manor and Hailey Medical Center
- The Harris Block furniture store and apartments
- Even Hailey’s city water system!
The Hailey Masonic Lodge was still being used as a meeting place for the Masons in 2010.
