What Does the Hainan Yellow Lantern Chili Look Like?
This hot chili turns a bright yellow color when it's ready. Each pepper is about 5 cm (2.0 in) long and 3.12 cm (1.23 in) wide. That's about the size of a small finger! Most Hainan yellow lantern chilies are used to make fiery hot sauce.
New Kinds of Hainan Yellow Lantern Chili
Scientists are always working to make plants better. In 2009, a group called the Tropical Vegetable Research Centre in China announced something exciting. They had created a new type, or cultivar, of the Hainan yellow lantern chili.
This new cultivar produces a lot more peppers than the original plant. It can grow 10 times more fruit! This means farmers can now get 5,000 kg (11,000 lb) of chilies from one Chinese acre (mu). Before, they only got about 500 kg (1,100 lb). This helps farmers grow more food and make more hot sauce!
