History of Haines Junction
For about 2,000 years, the Southern Tutchone people used the area around Haines Junction. They had special camps for hunting and fishing during different seasons. The original name for this place in the Southern Tutchone language was "Dakwakada." This means "high cache." The Tutchone people would build raised log structures called caches. They used these to store food all year or while they were hunting.
The Haines Junction area was also a big trading spot. It was where people from the coast and people from inland met to trade goods. This was because it was at the end of the Chilkat Pass. This pass was one of only three ways to travel between the coast and the inland areas. The coastal Tlingit people and the Southern Tutchone people used it a lot for trading.
The modern town of Haines Junction started in 1942 and 1943. This was during the building of the Alaska Highway. In 1943, another road, the Haines Highway, was built. This road connected the Alaska Highway to Haines, Alaska, a town on the coast. Because it was at the meeting point of these two highways, Haines Junction became a camp for workers. It also served as a place to get supplies for the United States Army Corps of Engineers who were building the highway. Later, a pipeline was built from Haines, Alaska, to Fairbanks, Alaska. A pumping station for this pipeline was built just north of Haines Junction.
