Early Life and High School Football
Hakeem Valles grew up in Sicklerville, New Jersey. He went to Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey. In high school, he played wide receiver. He was so good that he was named First-team All-New Jersey Prep during his junior year. He also played a bit as a quarterback and defensive back.
College Football Career
Hakeem played for the Monmouth Hawks at Monmouth University. He was part of the team from 2012 to 2015. He took a "redshirt" year in 2011, which means he practiced but did not play in games. He studied Business Administration in college.
Playing as a Wide Receiver
From 2011 to 2013, Hakeem played as a wide receiver. In 2012, he played in four games. The next year, in 2013, he played in 12 games.
Switching to Tight End
In 2014, Hakeem changed his position to tight end during training camp. That year, he played in 11 games and started nine of them. He caught 18 passes for 255 yards and scored three touchdowns. Time with the Arizona Cardinals
Hakeem signed with the Arizona Cardinals on May 2, 2016. He was not drafted by any team, so he joined as a free agent. The Cardinals released him on September 3, 2016. However, they signed him to their practice squad the very next day. On October 6, 2016, he was moved to the main team roster. He played his first NFL game and made his first start in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers. During the 2016 season, he played in 11 games, starting one. He made three tackles.
The Cardinals waived Hakeem on September 2, 2017.
Playing for the Detroit Lions
On September 6, 2017, Hakeem joined the Detroit Lions' practice squad. He was moved to the active roster on December 26, 2017.
