Halroy Candis Williams, born on December 14, 1938, is an American actor. He is well-known for his roles in popular TV shows. These include Police Officer Smith, also called "Smitty," on Sanford and Son. He also played Harley Foster on The Waltons. Many people know him as Lester Jenkins, the dad in the NBC sitcom 227. This show aired from 1985 to 1990.
Hal Williams has also appeared in several movies. Some of his film roles are in Private Benjamin (1980), Guess Who (2005), and Flight (2012).
Early Life and Acting Career
Hal Williams grew up in Columbus, Ohio. In the early 1960s, he started acting in local plays. Before becoming a full-time actor, he worked as a postal worker and a corrections officer. In 1968, he moved to Hollywood to chase his acting dreams.
He began acting full-time in 1970. Since then, Hal Williams has been in many movies. These include Hardcore, Private Benjamin, and The Rookie. He even played Sergeant L.C. "Ted" Ross in the TV show version of Private Benjamin.
In the 1990s, he worked with comedian Sinbad. He appeared in The Sinbad Show and The Cherokee Kid. In 2005, Hal Williams played the grandfather in the movie Guess Who, which starred Bernie Mac. He also had a guest role in the TV series Kung Fu as a friend named Caleb.
