Traditional Halalt territory

The Halalt First Nation (in their Halkomelem language: xeláltxw) is a group of Indigenous people who live on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. They are located on a reserve near the town of Chemainus.

The Halalt people have lived for a very long time in the lower Chemainus River Valley. This area also includes Willy Island, which is just off the coast near Chemainus.

About the Halalt Community

The Halalt First Nation is a self-governing community. They work to protect their unique culture, their land, and their rights. They are a member of the Naut'sa Mawt Tribal Council. This council helps different First Nations work together on important issues.

The Halalt also work with the Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group. This group helps them discuss important agreements, called treaties, with the Canadian government. These treaties are about land and rights for the future.

Halalt Traditional Territory

The traditional land of the Halalt people is very important to them. It includes the beautiful Chemainus River Valley. This valley flows into the ocean near Chemainus.

Willy Island, a small island near the shore, is also part of their historical territory. These lands have provided food, shelter, and cultural connections for generations of Halalt people.
