In the myth, Halcyon and her husband, Ceyx, were deeply in love. When Ceyx died in a shipwreck, Halcyon was so heartbroken that she threw herself into the sea. The gods, feeling sorry for them, transformed both Halcyon and Ceyx into kingfisher birds. The myth says that during the winter, for a few days around the shortest day of the year, the winds would calm down so that Halcyon could lay her eggs safely on the sea. These calm, peaceful days became known as "halcyon days," meaning a period of peace and happiness. The town of Halcyon was likely named to suggest a peaceful or ideal place, even though its existence was quite brief.
