Booker T. Washington's Birthplace
Hale's Ford is famous because it is where Booker T. Washington was born in 1856. He was born on the Burroughs Farm, which was a large tobacco farm. At that time, many people were forced to work without pay or freedom. This was called slavery.
Booker T. Washington's mother, Jane, was an enslaved Black woman. His father was a white farmer who lived nearby. After the American Civil War ended, Jane and her children moved to West Virginia. They went to join her husband, who had been sold there before the war.
The National Monument
Today, a special place called the Booker T. Washington National Monument helps us remember his life. It was created in 1956. This monument protects parts of the 207-acre (84 ha) tobacco farm where Washington was born. It teaches visitors about his life and how he became a national leader.
