How Did Hale's Get Started?
The story of Hale's began in 1880. A person named Prentis Cobb Hale and his two brothers opened a store. They called it the Criterion store. It was located in Downtown Sacramento. Just one year later, in 1881, they changed the name. It became Hale Brothers & Company.
Where Did Hale's Stores Open?
The company quickly grew. They opened big stores in other cities. A store in San Francisco opened in 1892. Another one in San Jose opened in 1896. They also had stores in Salinas, Stockton, and Petaluma. In 1906, they bought another company called Whitthorne & Swann. This helped them open a store in Oakland.
Famous Locations of Hale's Stores
The main Sacramento store was at 825-831 K Street. It was a very large building. Its front was about 123 feet long on K Street. It was also 160 feet long on Ninth Street. The San Jose store was at the corner of 1st and San Carlos streets. In San Francisco, the first store was at 989 Market Street. Later, it moved to 901 Market Street at Fifth. This new building was designed by famous architects, Reid & Reid.
What Happened to Hale's?
Over time, big changes happened for Hale's. In 1949, Hale's bought a competing store in Sacramento. This store was called Weinstock, Lubin & Co.. In the same year, Hale's joined forces with another large store. This was Los Angeles-based Broadway Department Stores.
The New Name: Broadway-Hale Stores
After joining, the company changed its name. It became Broadway-Hale Stores. Later, it was known as Carter Hawley Hale Stores. Eventually, it went back to being called Broadway-Hale Stores.
Hale's Connection to Other Stores
Hale Bros. also owned a part of another store. They had 30% ownership of J. M. Hale Co. This store was also known as Hales. It was located in Los Angeles. One of the original Hale Brothers, James M. Hale, founded this store.
