The Halesia diptera, often called the two-wing silverbell or two-winged snowdrop tree, is a beautiful plant. It belongs to the Styracaceae family. This tree grows naturally in the southeastern United States. You can find it from South Carolina and Florida west to eastern Texas. People often plant it in their gardens because it's a lovely ornamental tree.
Description
This plant can be a large shrub or a small tree. It usually grows about 4 to 8 meters (13 to 26 feet) tall. Its leaves are deciduous, which means they fall off in the autumn. The leaves are about 6 to 12 centimeters (2.4 to 4.7 inches) long. They are also 4 to 7 centimeters (1.6 to 2.8 inches) wide.
The flowers of the two-wing silverbell are white. They are about 2 to 2.5 centimeters (0.8 to 1 inch) long. These pretty flowers grow in groups of 3 to 6 together.
The fruit of this tree is a dry drupe. A drupe is a type of fruit with a hard pit inside. This fruit is special because it has two wings along its sides. This feature helps tell it apart from other Halesia species. Most other Halesia trees have fruits with four wings.
Wildlife, like squirrels, enjoy eating the unripe green fruit. It has a sour taste.
Varieties
Just like there are different types of apples, there are different types, or "varieties," of the two-wing silverbell. These varieties are slightly different from each other.
There are two main varieties of Halesia diptera:
- Halesia diptera var. diptera
- Halesia diptera var. magniflora R.K.Godfrey
