The Clifton Museum Park is a special place in Windsor, Nova Scotia. It is part of the Nova Scotia Museum system. This museum is inside a historic house built in the 1830s.
The house was originally built for Thomas Chandler Haliburton. He was born in Windsor and became one of Canada's first famous writers. His funny stories about a character named "Sam Slick" were very popular. People all over the English-speaking world enjoyed them in the 1840s. Because of this, the house was sometimes called the "Sam Slick House."
Over the years, the house had many different owners. They all made changes to it until the 1920s. In 1939, the province of Nova Scotia bought the house. It opened as the Haliburton Memorial Museum in 1940.
Discovering the Museum
What You Can See Inside
When Thomas Chandler Haliburton moved to England in 1856, he sold his house and everything in it. So, the museum does not have all his original belongings. However, it does have some furniture and special items that belonged to him. One of these is his actual writing desk!
Most of these items were given to the Nova Scotia Museum as gifts. They were collected when the museum first opened in 1940. The rest of the museum is filled with "period pieces." These are furniture and objects from the same time period when Haliburton lived there. They help visitors imagine what life was like back then.
Visiting the Park and Museum
The museum building itself is open to visitors every year. You can explore it from June 1st until early October. The park around the museum is much larger, covering 34 acres. This beautiful park is open all year round for everyone to enjoy.
