History of the Temple
Building the Temple
The journey to build the Halifax Nova Scotia Temple began on October 12, 1998. On that day, which was Thanksgiving Day in Canada, a special event called a groundbreaking ceremony took place. During this ceremony, leaders and members gathered to officially start the construction. About 700 members attended, led by Jay E. Jensen.
Opening and Dedication
Before the temple was officially opened, about 8,000 people were able to tour the building. This allowed everyone, including those not of the faith, to see inside.
The temple was dedicated on November 14, 1999. The dedication is a special ceremony that officially opens the temple for its sacred purposes. Gordon B. Hinckley, who was the president of the Church at that time, dedicated the temple.
Interestingly, the dedication of the Halifax temple was delayed by one day. This happened because of a problem with President Hinckley's airplane. Because of this delay, the Halifax temple was dedicated on the same day as another temple, the Regina Saskatchewan Temple. This was the first time two temples of the Church were dedicated on the same day. President Hinckley stayed in Cole Harbour, while another Church leader, Boyd K. Packer, went to Regina for the other dedication.
Temple Features
The Halifax temple has a total floor area of about 10,700 square feet (994 square meters). Inside, it has two rooms for special ceremonies, called ordinance rooms. It also has two sealing rooms, where families can be united forever.
Recent Events
In 2020, the Halifax Nova Scotia Temple temporarily closed its doors. This closure was a response to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic. Like many public places, the temple closed to help keep people safe and healthy.
