Halls Bluff, also known as Hall's Bluff, is a ghost town located in Houston County, Texas, United States. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, and it's mostly empty now.
History
Halls Bluff was founded in the early 1850s. It was named after Joshua James Hall. He was an early pioneer who started a warehouse and shipping business there. This business was on the Trinity River.
Steamboats often stopped in Halls Bluff. They carried cotton down the Trinity River. They also brought goods up from Galveston to Crockett. The town's post office opened in 1852. It operated with some breaks until the mid-1850s.
The town began to decline after 1872. This was when the Houston and Great Northern Railroad reached Crockett. People started to move away. By the mid-1930s, Halls Bluff still had a church and some homes. After World War II, many more people left the community. By the 1960s, only a few scattered houses remained. In the early 1990s, Halls Bluff was described as a spread-out, rural area.
