What are the types of Halocarpus?
There are three main species of Halocarpus that scientists know about. Each one has its own special features.
Halocarpus bidwillii
This species is often called the bog pine or mountain pine. It is a small tree or shrub that grows in many parts of New Zealand. It can be found in wet, boggy areas or in mountain regions. It was first described by J. D. Hooker and Thomas Kirk.
Halocarpus biformis
This plant is known as the yellow pine or pink pine. It is another type of Halocarpus that grows only in New Zealand. It can grow into a small tree. Its name, biformis, means "two forms," which might refer to how its leaves can look different at different stages of its life.
Halocarpus kirkii
This species is commonly called monoao. Like the other two, it is also found only in New Zealand. It is a larger tree compared to the other Halocarpus species. It was named after Thomas Kirk, a famous botanist who studied New Zealand plants.
