Haly Heron facts for kids
Haly Heron was an English writer and soldier who lived a long time ago, during a period called the Elizabethan era. He was born around 1550 and died in 1591. He even became a Captain in the army!
Haly Heron's Early Life and Education
Haly Heron started studying at Queens' College, Cambridge in November 1565. He was a "sizar," which meant he got help with his college costs, probably by doing some work for the college. He finished his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts, in 1570.
Writing Career
In 1579, Haly wrote a book called ‘A new Discourse of Morall Philosophie entituled the Kayes of Counsaile, not so pleasant as profitable for younge Courtiours.’ He wrote this book to help a student named John Kaye the younger. It was a guide with advice for young people who worked in the royal court.
Military Service and Later Life
Soon after his book was published, Haly Heron began working for Sir Nicholas Malby in a place called Connaught in Ireland.
Later, in 1586, Haly served as a soldier in the Low Countries (which are now parts of Belgium and the Netherlands). This was during a big fight between England and Spain, known as the Anglo-Spanish War. He showed great skill and was promoted to a Captain in 1590.
Sadly, Captain Haly Heron was killed in May 1591. He was leading an attack on a town in Brittany, a region in France, when he died.
