Hamburg was first established around the year 1812. It was built along an old road called Zane's Trace, which was an important path for early settlers in Ohio. The community was named after the famous city of Hamburg in Germany. A post office opened in Hamburg in 1859, helping people send and receive mail, but it closed down in 1905.
