Hamilton is a small, unincorporated community located in Olive Township, St. Joseph County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. It's part of the larger county area.
History of Hamilton
The community of Hamilton has an interesting past. It was first known by a different name: Terre Coupee. In 1837, the area was "platted," which means someone drew up a map showing how the land was divided into lots for streets and buildings. The name Hamilton comes from a place called Hamilton's Tavern, which used to be in the community.
A post office opened in Terre Coupee in 1831. This post office helped people send and receive mail for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1893.
