The Life of Hamilton Wright Mabie
Hamilton Wright Mabie was born in Cold Spring, New York, in 1846. His family moved to Buffalo, New York, when he was young. This was because of new business chances from the Erie Canal opening.
Mabie was a very smart student. He passed his college entrance exam at just 16 years old. He later went to Williams College and then Columbia Law School. While at Williams, he was part of a group called Alpha Delta Phi. He even became the first president of a big group for fraternities.
He earned special degrees from several universities. Even though he studied law, he did not like it. In 1876, he married Jeanette Trivett. In 1879, he started working at a weekly magazine called Christian Union. This magazine later changed its name to The Outlook. He worked there for the rest of his life.
In 1884, Mabie became an associate editor at the Christian Union. He also joined a special group called the Author's Club. Many famous writers were part of this club.
In 1890, Mabie published a small book of his essays. It was called My Study Fire. These essays shared his thoughts on life, books, and nature. You can find many of Mabie's books online at Project Gutenberg.
