History of Hamnett District

The Hamnett Historic District was officially recognized in 2010. It is located in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania. Many of its 77 historic buildings are homes. These homes were designed in popular styles like Queen Anne and Colonial Revival.

Bringing Old Buildings Back to Life

Work to restore the old buildings in this district began in 2004. This effort was started by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. They worked with their development group, Landmark Development Corporation.

Within ten years, more than 70 buildings were improved. A new neighborhood center was opened. The community also gained more affordable housing. Because of their great work, the groups received the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation National Preservation Award. This award celebrates efforts to save historic places.

In 2015, these groups teamed up with Falconhurst Development. They started an $11.5 million project to restore more buildings. This project focused on four empty buildings built around the early 1900s. They also planned to build new townhouses in the area by 2016. These new homes were also designed to be affordable. The project officially began in September 2015.

Becoming a National Historic Place

To become a national historic place, the Hamnett Historic District had to be reviewed. The Historic Preservation Board of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission looked at the application. This happened at a meeting on October 6, 2009.

After review, the Hamnett Historic District was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 28, 2010. This listing helps protect the district's historic buildings and character.
