The company was started way back in 1878 by a man named Youssef Hammoud. He was an expert at mixing flavors. He opened his first factory in a neighborhood of Algiers called Belcourt.
The First Famous Drink
Youssef created a lemonade called "La Royale." He made it with special lemon flavors that he picked himself. This drink was so good that it won a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair in 1889! This lemonade was the original version of a drink now called "Hamoud la Blanche."
In 1907, the company created another drink with an apple and caramel flavor. Today, this drink is known as SELECTO. It has become a special part of Algerian culture.
A New Name and New Drinks
In 1920, Youssef's grandson, Boualem Hammoud, took over. He officially named the company Hamoud Boualem & Cie. The company also moved to a new building, which is still its headquarters today.
