Handel's Homemade Ice Cream is a super popular ice cream company. It was started by Alice Handel way back in 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio. Today, Handel's has grown a lot! As of early 2024, there are about 125 Handel's ice cream shops in 12 different states across the United States. The company is currently owned by Leonard Fisher, and its main office is in Canfield, Ohio.
How Handel's Ice Cream Began
Handel's Ice Cream started in the summer of 1945. Alice Handel began selling her delicious ice cream from her husband's gas station in Youngstown, Ohio. She made the first batches using fresh fruit she picked from her own backyard. She also used old-fashioned recipes, which made her ice cream extra special. Over the years, Handel's has expanded its menu to include more than 150 homemade ice cream flavors. You can now find Handel's locations in Ohio and 13 other states across the U.S.
Why Handel's Is So Popular
Handel's Ice Cream has received lots of praise! The Travel Channel once called Handel's "One of the Best Ice Cream Parlors in the Country." In 2002, USA Today newspaper said it was one of the top ten best ice cream businesses in the whole country.
In 2020, Entrepreneur Magazine listed Handel's as one of the top 500 franchises. A franchise is a business where you can open your own store using a famous brand's name and recipes. The very first Handel's stand in Youngstown, Ohio, is still open today. It's even been called "The Busiest Ice Cream Stand in America" by Ohio Restaurant News.
Chocolatier Magazine also said Handel's has "One of the Best Ice Creams in America." In 2006, the famous National Geographic magazine named Handel's the number one ice cream in their book 10 Best of Everything. Many other well-known publications like People Magazine and U.S. News & World Report have also written about how successful Handel's is.
