Handel's Homemade Ice Cream is a popular ice cream company. It was started by Alice Handel in 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio. Today, the company has more than 150 stores. These stores are found in 15 different states across the United States.
Handel's is currently owned by Leonard Fisher. Its main office is in Canfield, Ohio. There is also a special area in Youngstown, Ohio, that is known as the "Handel's neighborhood district."
A Scoop of History: How Handel's Started
Handel's Ice Cream began in the summer of 1945. Alice Handel started making and selling ice cream from her husband's gas station. This was in Youngstown, Ohio.
She made her first batches of ice cream using fresh fruit. This fruit came right from her own backyard! She used old-fashioned recipes to create delicious flavors. Today, Handel's offers a huge menu with over 150 different ice cream flavors.

Handel's Ice Cream has received many awards and been praised by different groups. The Travel Channel called Handel's "One of the Best Ice Cream Parlors in the Country."
In July 2002, USA Today newspaper said it was one of the top ten best ice cream businesses in the United States. In 2020, Entrepreneur Magazine listed Handel's as one of the top 500 franchise businesses.
The very first Handel's stand is still in Youngstown, Ohio. Ohio Restaurant News has called it "The Busiest Ice Cream Stand in America." Chocolatier Magazine also said Handel's had "One of the Best Ice Creams in America."
In 2006, National Geographic named Handel's the number one ice cream. This was in their book called 10 Best of Everything. Other famous publications like People Magazine and U.S. News & World Report have also written about Handel's success. The company is even mentioned in a book called Everyone Loves Ice Cream.
