Hannah-Mary Dee is a British scientist who works with computers. She is an expert in Computer Science and Cognitive Science. This means she studies how computers can "see" and understand things, much like our brains do. She also looks at how people think and learn.

Hannah Dee is known for her work in computer vision. This field teaches computers to understand images and videos. She has used this skill in many areas, like studying plants, helping robots navigate, creating art, and even in medical imaging. In 2014, she was recognized as one of 30 important women in the field of Information Technology (IT) by the British Computer Society.

Hannah Dee cares a lot about encouraging more women to get involved in computing. She has organized many fun events to help girls and women learn about technology. For example, she held a family fun day where people could learn to program Android apps. The learning materials were available in both Welsh and English.

Education and Learning

Hannah Dee studied at the University of Leeds. She earned three degrees there:

  • A Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Cognitive Science in 1996.
  • A Master of Arts (MA) in Philosophy in 1998.
  • A PhD in Computing in 2005.

Career and Research Work

After finishing her studies, Hannah Dee worked as a researcher at different universities. She was at Kingston University from 2005 to 2006. Then she returned to the University of Leeds from 2006 to 2009. She also worked at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble in France from 2009 to 2010.

Since 2010, Hannah Dee has been a Senior Lecturer in computer science at Aberystwyth University in Wales. This means she teaches university students and also does her own research.

She has also been involved with the British Computer Society (BCS). Since 2011, she has been the deputy chair of the BCS Mid Wales branch.

Helping Women in Computing

Hannah Dee created and runs an important event called the BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium. This is a special one-day conference for women and non-binary students who are studying computing. It helps them meet other students from across the UK and get advice about their careers from successful women in the tech world. Hannah Dee was the chair of this event for 10 years, starting in 2008.

Her research often focuses on using computer vision to understand how people behave. She also studies how shadows appear and what they mean in images. Another area she looks into is how students feel about studying computer science. She is well-known for being a strong supporter of women in the IT field.

Awards and Recognitions

Hannah Dee has received several awards and honors for her work:

  • In 2014, she was featured in an e-book called Women in IT: Inspiring the next generation. This book was created by the BCS to highlight important women in technology.
  • In 2016, Computer Weekly magazine named her one of the 50 most influential women in UK IT.
  • She was also voted the 15th most influential woman in UK IT in 2014.
  • In 2015, she was identified as the 10th Most Influential Woman in UK IT by Computer Weekly.
  • In 2018, Hannah Dee was added to the Computer Weekly 'Most Influential Women in UK IT' Hall of Fame. This is a special group of people recognized for their lasting impact.
  • In June 2024, Hannah Dee was given a special award called Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This award was given by King Charles III to recognize her great work in technology and for helping women in the IT sector.
