Hannah-Mary Dee is a brilliant British scientist. She is a cognitive scientist and a computer scientist. This means she studies how our brains work and how computers can "see" and understand things. She is especially good at something called computer vision. This helps computers understand images and videos.

Hannah Dee uses her skills in many cool areas. She works with plants, helps computers navigate, and even uses her knowledge in art and medicine. In 2014, she was named one of the top 30 women in IT by the British Computer Society.

She also works hard to help other women get into computing. She has organized many events to encourage girls and women in technology. One fun event was an Android programming day for families. The materials were even available in both Welsh and English!

Hannah Dee's Education

Hannah Dee studied at the University of Leeds. She earned three degrees there.

  • First, she got a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Cognitive Science in 1996. This is about how we think and learn.
  • Then, she earned a Master of Arts (MA) in Philosophy in 1998. Philosophy helps us think deeply about big questions.
  • Finally, she completed her PhD in Computing in 2005. This is the highest degree you can get, showing she is an expert in computer science.

Her Career and Research

After her PhD, Hannah Dee worked as a postdoctoral researcher. This means she continued her studies and research. She worked at Kingston University and the University of Leeds. She also worked in France at the Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble.

Since 2010, she has been a Senior Lecturer at Aberystwyth University. Here, she teaches and does research in computer science. She also helps lead the local branch of the British Computer Society.

Helping Women in Computing

Hannah Dee is very passionate about helping women in technology. She created and runs the annual BCSWomen Lovelace Colloquium. This is a special conference for women and non-binary students who are studying computing. It helps them meet other students and get career advice. It's a great way to encourage more diversity in the tech world.

Her research focuses on several interesting topics:

  • Computer vision: This is about teaching computers to "see" and understand human actions.
  • Shadow detection: She works on how computers can find and understand shadows in images.
  • Student attitudes: She also studies how students feel about learning computer science.

She is well-known for being a strong supporter of women in the IT field.

Her Publications

Hannah Dee has written many important papers. These papers share her research findings with other scientists. Some of her publications include:

  • How to handle noise in ultrasound images.
  • Recognizing faces using special computer methods.
  • Building smart computer models from videos.
  • Improving how plants grow for energy.
  • Understanding how shadows look and what they mean.
  • Analyzing how crowds move using computer vision.
  • Using computer knowledge to find shadows.

Awards and Special Recognition

Hannah Dee has received many awards for her amazing work.

  • In 2014, she was featured in an e-book called Women in IT: Inspiring the next generation. This book highlighted 30 inspiring women in technology.
  • In 2016, Computer Weekly named her one of the 50 most influential women in UK IT.
  • She was also voted the 15th most influential woman in UK IT in 2014.
  • In 2015, she moved up to the 10th most influential woman in UK IT.
  • In 2018, Hannah Dee was added to the Computer Weekly 'Most Influential Women in UK IT' Hall of Fame. This is a very special honor!
  • In June 2024, she received an even bigger honor. She was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). This award from King Charles recognizes her great work in technology and for helping women in the IT sector.
