Hannah Alice Hampton, born on November 16, 2000, is a talented English professional footballer. She plays as a goalkeeper for Women's Super League club Chelsea and is also a key player for the England national team. Hannah started her football journey in youth teams like Villarreal CF in Spain, and later with Stoke City and Birmingham City in England. Before joining Chelsea, she also played for Aston Villa.

Hannah's Early Life and Football Start

Hannah Hampton was born in Birmingham, England. When she was five years old, her family moved to Spain. There, she joined the youth academy of Villarreal CF. Interestingly, Hannah didn't start as a goalkeeper; she played as a striker! Her parents, Chris and Laura, were teachers at the British School of Vila-real, where Hannah also studied.

In 2010, Hannah moved back to England and joined the Stoke City Centre of Excellence. It was during her time at Stoke that she made a big change: she switched from being a striker to becoming a goalkeeper. Stoke City even put up a special plaque to honor her as part of their "Where Greatness Is Made" campaign.

Playing for Clubs

Birmingham City

In 2016, Hannah joined the Birmingham City youth academy. She made her first appearance for the senior team on November 5, 2017, in a League Cup game. After showing her skills, she signed her first professional contract with the club in December 2018.

When the main goalkeeper left in 2018, Hannah got more chances to play. She started in 12 matches during the 2018–19 season, helping her team not concede many goals. Because of her great performance, she was named the club's Young Player of the Season in May 2019. Hannah continued to play a lot for Birmingham City, appearing in 34 of 35 league games over the next two seasons. She left the club in 2021 when her contract ended.

Aston Villa

On July 3, 2021, Hannah joined another FA WSL team, Aston Villa, signing a two-year contract.

Chelsea

On July 4, 2023, Hannah joined Chelsea, signing a three-year contract. She played her first game for Chelsea on December 17, 2023, against Bristol City. She was praised for her amazing saves in that game, which Chelsea won 3–0. She quickly became Chelsea's main goalkeeper for the 2023–24 season.

In the 2024–25 season, Hannah was a star player. She helped Chelsea become the first team in the Women's Super League to finish a 22-game season without losing a single match! She kept 13 clean sheets (meaning she didn't let the other team score in 13 games). Because of her excellent performance, she shared the Golden Glove award, which is given to the goalkeeper with the most clean sheets.

Playing for England

Youth Teams

Hannah's journey with the England national team started early. In February 2013, when she was just 12 years old, she was called up to the England Under-15 squad. She then moved up to the Under-17 team and played in the qualifiers for the 2017 UEFA Women's Under-17 Championship. Her team made it to the Euro Finals in the Czech Republic.

Hannah continued to play for England's youth teams, including the Under-19 squad. In 2018, she helped her team qualify for the 2019 UEFA Women's Under-19 Championship. She even had two clean sheets in important games and was named Player of the Match against Italy. In August 2019, she was called up to the Under-21 team.

Senior England Team

In February 2020, Hannah was first called up to train with the senior England team. She made her official debut for England on February 20, 2022, in a game against Spain.

Hannah was part of the England squad that won the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 in July 2022, a huge achievement! She also played a role in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in July 2023, where England finished as runners-up.

In April 2024, Hannah started playing more regularly for England in the Euro 2025 qualifying matches. She kept a clean sheet in a 2–0 win against the Republic of Ireland. She continued to impress, making a "stunning" save in a game against France in June 2024. Many people in the football world started to see her as a strong contender for England's main goalkeeper spot.

In May 2025, after another goalkeeper retired, Hannah became the only goalkeeper in the squad for UEFA Women's Euro 2025 who had already played for the senior team. She was named player of the match in England's quarter-final victory over Sweden, which they won after a penalty shoot-out. Hannah made two crucial saves during the penalty shootout, even after getting a nosebleed during the game!

Hannah started in the tournament's final on July 27, 2025. She made two more amazing saves in the penalty shootout, helping England beat Spain to win their second European title in a row! Her fantastic saves throughout the tournament earned her a lot of praise, and she was named the player of the match in the final. England's manager, Sarina Wiegman, said Hannah's performance was "amazing" and "like a fairy tale." After the tournament, Hannah shared that her grandfather had passed away just before the competition started.

Hannah's Personal Life

Hannah was born with an eye condition called strabismus, which can affect how well someone sees depth. When she was three years old, she had three operations at Birmingham Children's Hospital to help with this condition. Today, she is an ambassador for the hospital, helping others. Besides speaking English, Hannah is also fluent in Spanish and knows sign language.
