The Hannibal Islands are a collection of small landmasses. They are located in Shelburne Bay, which is in the very northern part of Queensland, Australia. These islands are an important part of the amazing Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Where are the Hannibal Islands?

You can find the Hannibal Islands about 100 kilometers (62 miles) north of Cape Grenville. This area is part of the famous Cape York Peninsula. The islands are also quite close, about 10 kilometers (6 miles), to a place called Captain Billy Landing.

How the Islands Got Their Name

The Hannibal Islands were named in 1819 by a person named Phillip Parker King. He was an explorer and naval officer. King decided to name the islands after his brother-in-law, who was called Hannibal Macarthur.
