Early Political Life
Hans Enoksen speaks only the Greenlandic language. In 2001, he became the Minister for Fisheries, Hunting, and Settlements. This meant he was in charge of rules about fishing, hunting, and where people live in Greenland. He also became the leader of a political party called Siumut.
Becoming Prime Minister
In the 2002 general election in Greenland, Enoksen's party, Siumut, won 28% of the votes. This was less than they had in the 1999 election. However, they still won the most seats in Parliament, getting 10 out of 31.
To form a government, Siumut teamed up with another party called Inuit Ataqatigiit. This team is called a coalition. On December 14, 2002, Hans Enoksen became the Prime Minister. The two parties then started talking with Denmark and the United States. They wanted to change how much money Greenland received for the U.S. Thule Air Base in northern Greenland.
Changes in Leadership
In the 2009 election, Enoksen's party lost to Inuit Ataqatigiit. Inuit Ataqatigiit won 43% of the votes, while Siumut got 26%. After this election, Hans Enoksen decided to step down as the leader of the Siumut party.
Starting a New Party
Even though he was no longer party leader, Hans Enoksen was re-elected to Parliament in the 2013 election. However, in January 2014, he was not happy with the way Siumut was doing things. Because of this, he left the party.
He then started a brand new political party called Partii Naleraq. This new party did well in the elections on November 28, 2014. They won 11.6% of the votes. This meant three members of Partii Naleraq were elected to the Greenlandic Parliament. Hans Enoksen himself received 2,425 personal votes, showing strong support.
Speaker of Parliament
In 2018, Hans Enoksen held another important role. He became the Speaker of the Inatsisartut. The Inatsisartut is Greenland's Parliament. The Speaker is like the referee in a debate, making sure meetings run smoothly and fairly.
