Hans Verhagen (born March 3, 1939 – died April 10, 2020) was a talented Dutch artist. He was known for many things: being a journalist, a poet, a painter, and even a filmmaker! Hans Verhagen was born in a city called Vlissingen in the Netherlands.
In 2009, he received a very important award called the P. C. Hooft Award. He won this award because of his funny writing, his passion, and his brave and imaginative poems.
Hans Verhagen's Work
Hans Verhagen started writing poetry in the early 1960s. His poems were often written in a special way, using short sections. These sections would include ideas from everyday life and even science.
One example of his early poetry style showed how he thought about things:
- War with myself
- (images, body parts, letters)
- after only 1 second the air-raid warning escapes
Later, Hans Verhagen joked about this early style. He called it "New Realist" writing. He said it sometimes had confusing symbols and unclear pictures.
In 1971, he released a book called Duizenden zonsondergangen (which means "Thousands of sunsets"). In this book, his writing style changed. It became more emotional and romantic.
After the 1980s, Hans Verhagen focused mostly on painting. He did not write poetry again until the early 2000s.
