The Life of Hans von Bartels
Hans von Bartels was born in Hamburg, Germany, in 1856. His father, Dr. N. F. F. von Bartels, worked for the Russian government. From a young age, Hans showed a talent for art. He began his art studies with a marine (sea) painter named R. Hardorff in Hamburg.
Becoming an Artist
Hans continued to learn from other artists. He studied with C. Schweitzer in Düsseldorf and with Carl Oesterley back in Hamburg. Later, he went to the Berlin School of Art to finish his training. After his studies, Hans traveled a lot, especially in Italy. These travels helped him see different places and get new ideas for his art.
In 1885, Hans settled in Munich, another big city in Germany. His artistic skills were so impressive that in 1891, he was made a professor of painting. This was a big honor! He lived and worked in Munich until he passed away in 1913.
Hans's Unique Painting Style
Hans von Bartels was part of a group called the Düsseldorf school of painting. Even though he was a powerful oil painter, he became one of Germany's best watercolor artists. He mostly painted scenes of the ocean and the lives of fishing people. He painted with a lot of energy and showed great skill.
Hans made a huge difference in how watercolor was used. He was one of the first artists to create very large watercolor paintings. Before him, artists usually used watercolors for smaller, more detailed works. From 1887, Hans spent every summer on the Dutch coast, especially in a town called Katwijk aan Zee. He loved to paint the local fisherfolk and their hard work. He was especially good at showing stormy seas and the strong, healthy people who lived by the northern coasts.
Because of his amazing talent, Hans became an honorary member of many important art groups in England, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria.
