Harbine, Kansas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Harbine is a small, unincorporated community located in Republic County, Kansas, in the United States. It sits right on the border with Nebraska, just south of a town called Byron, Nebraska. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.

The Story of Harbine's Name

The community of Harbine has an interesting history regarding its name. It was first established as "Harbine" in 1877. At that time, it was expected that the B&M Railroad would extend its tracks to this spot.

However, in 1889, people discovered there was already another post office in Nebraska named Harbine. To avoid confusion, the community on the Nebraska side of the border was renamed to Byron. Today, the Kansas side of the state border is still known as Harbine, Kansas, while the Nebraska side is called Byron, Nebraska. The post office in Harbine, Kansas, actually closed way back in 1883.
