Hardscramble is an old stone building near Seguin, Texas. It was built in the early 1800s. This special place was once a home base for some of the first and most famous Texas Rangers.
Hardscramble's Past
Hardscramble has a rich history. Research for a Texas historical marker shows its importance. From 1841 to 1853, it was a home station for early Texas Rangers. These included Henry McCulloch and Benjamin McCulloch.
Later, other people lived in the building. Nathaniel Benton lived there in 1858. Elijah Dale made it his home in 1871.
Honoring the Site
In 1936, a special Texas Centennial marker was placed at Hardscramble. This marker honors the location and its history. The old ranger station and the marker are still there today. Sometimes, you can even arrange tours to visit this historic spot.
Another Ranger Station
There was once another ranger station nearby. It was older and made of adobe. This was the Walnut Branch Ranger Station. It also had a hospital. It stood at the corner of Court and Guadalupe Streets. Rangers like those led by Mathew Caldwell used this station. Sadly, this old building was taken down around the year 2000. Now, a city historical marker stands there to remember its location and history.
