A Look Back: Hargill's History

The story of Hargill began in the early 1900s. A large area of land, including where Hargill is now, was owned by a company called the Missouri Texas Land and Irrigation Company.

In 1916, two smart businessmen, William Apsey Harding and Samuel Lamar Gill, decided to work together. They formed a company called the Harding-Gill Company. Their goal was to develop and improve this land. The name "Hargill" comes from combining parts of their last names: Harding and Gill.

Over time, the community grew.

  • In 1920, a school was built, which was very important for the children living there.
  • A post office opened in 1924, making it easier for people to send and receive mail.
  • A railroad station was set up in 1926, which helped with travel and moving goods.

By 1930, Hargill had about 400 residents, along with several stores and three churches. The number of people living in Hargill continued to grow, reaching about 450 by the late 1940s. While the population dropped to around 100 in the mid-1960s, it started to grow again later in the 20th century. By 1990, more than 1,300 people lived in Hargill, and the population stayed around that level in 2000.
