Early Life and Artistic Beginnings
Terje Brofos was born in May 1940 in Oslo, Norway. He grew up in the Berg neighborhood of Oslo. In 1944, he was seriously hurt in a traffic accident. His father, Fritjof, was an engineer. His mother, Elsa, worked as a biochemist.
When he was young, Pushwagner was very good at sports. He was one of Norway's best tennis players. In 1955, he played in a doubles final for the Norwegian championship.
Pushwagner finished his studies at the State's School of Art and Design of Oslo in 1959. He later said that he stopped drawing for a while after school. It took him several years to find his own special art style.
Artistic Journey and Key Works
Pushwagner met the Norwegian author Axel Jensen in 1968. Pushwagner saw Jensen as a mentor. They lived together for a while in different places. These included Oslo, Fredrikstad, Stockholm, and Menorca. Pushwagner drew pictures for Jensen's book Og resten står skrivd i stjernene (1995).
Pushwagner loved comics since he was a child. Meeting Jensen inspired him to start his own art series. These included "Soft City" and "Doktor Fantastisk."
In 2009, Pushwagner won back the rights to his drawings from Morten Dreyer. This was an important step for him.
In July 2012, a book about his art was published in London. This book came out at the same time as an art show in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. The show later traveled to Norway and the Netherlands.
